The developing Walker’s Point retail scene is benefiting from new blood — like that of 75-year-old Beverly Berson.
Sixty years ago, Berson helped her mother open Gigi Bridal Shop at 37th and North.
“I was 15 years old,” she said Wednesday. “I sold wedding gowns and bobby socks and tennis shoes.”
Berson eventually took over ownership of Gigi, a bridal and designer fashion shop that is one of the oldest continuously operating women’s boutiques in the Milwaukee area.
It’s best known as Gigi of Mequon, because for the last 30 years the shop has catered to a suburban clientele from quarters at 1550 W. Mequon Road.
No more. Berson has rechristened her business Gigi MKE and moved it to a former factory at 234 W. Florida St. in Walker’s Point, home to coffee shops, microbreweries and dining spots that cater to a youthful, urban-embracing crowd.
